4. Objectives-
After defining the vocabulary words from "Emancipation from Lincoln: A Photobiography" by using context clues from provided sentences, independently providing real life of each vocabulary word, and working with partners to discuss each vocabulary word, students will be able to create and original sentence that uses the vocabulary words in their proper context.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Aid: Vocabulary Worksheets

Technology: Smartboard and Elmo projector.

TEXT: Prentice Hall Literature: Common Core Edition: Grade 8.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Anticipatory Set: Explain what will be accomplished; including defining new vocabulary words, using vocabulary in sentences, reading "Lincoln" and inferences the text.
2. Ask who Abraham Lincoln was, then briefly explain his background.
3. Do Now: define 3 vocabulary words (alienate, compensate, and humiliating).
 

B. Development-

1. Model first vocabulary word by finding the meaning and part of speech for "alienate" from the provided.
2. Explain different parts of speech i.e. past tense and adjective.
 

C. Practice-

1. Students will determine the meaning and parts of speech for "compensate".
2. Discuss answer together.
3. Students will determine the meaning and parts of speech for "humiliating".
4. Discuss answer together.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Instruct students to independently complete "Part B" for within 5-10 minutes.
2. Discuss and share students' answers together.
3. Provide feedback to students and additional examples.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. On the "Smartboard", provide simpler alternative sentences so lower level students can determine definitions from context clues.
2. Provide photos on "Smartboard" that may help depict what the words mean beside the sentences.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Working with a partner, students will discuss each word meaning, part of speech, and example.
2. Then with a partner, students with create an original sentence together for each vocabulary word.
 

G. Closure-

1. Students will read the non-fiction essay, "Emancipation from Lincoln: A Photobiography"
2. First section read aloud by teacher.
3. Second section read aloud by students, selectively.
4. Third section read independently by students.
