In this lesson plan, students will be learning and discussing the definition of a "femme fatale." Student's will also explore the characteristics that make up a "femme fatale" in addition to the role they play in British Literature.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Establish the origin of the term femme fatale.
2.Define "femme fatale."
3.The "femme fatale" role in British Literature.
 
4. Objectives-
1.To teach students a basic definition of the term "femme fatale."
2. Briefly educate my students about the history of the term, and familiarize them with characteristics of a femme fatale.
3.Using applied knowledge (gained during the introduction) students should be able to identify and provide examples of women who mirrors qualities such as a femme fatale.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Paper, Pencil/Pen, PowerPoint, Computer, Printer, Norton Anthology of English Literature, 8th edition, volumes; D, E, F,
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

The term "femme fatale" is defined as a French phrase with the literal translation of "fatal woman." A femme fatale is a sensuous, alluring woman who often leads men into danger or trouble. Being attractive, sexy, seductive, but ultimately dangerous are all key characteristics of a femme fatale. The term has existed in one form or another in nearly all cultures (and different literature's) throughout history.
The "femme fatale" represents a threat to the traditional female gender roles, and female independence.
 

B. Development-

1. Brief history/origin of the femme fatale through a PowerPoint presentation.
2. Identifying a femme fatale character in British Literature. Read 'Salome' by Oscar Wilde, and follow directions on the in-class worksheet provided.
 

C. Practice-

After reading Salome by Oscar Wilde, identify at least five of Salome's characteristics in which categorize her as a femme fatale. Your response should include a definition of "femme fatale" (in your own words) and details from the text in which support your five qualities pertaining to 'femme fatale.'
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Creative Writing Assignment: Pick one of the three British Literature pieces we discussed in class and identify and explain the 'femme fatale' character. Also describe the characteristics that support your theory, and don't forget to use examples from your book!
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Read Salome aloud, followed by reading the directions for the guided practice aloud. Then have students write personal response on their own.
2.First, have student's brainstorm characteristics of a femme fatale, and write them up on the white board. Have student's copy down the list they came up with in their notes for reference.
 

G. Closure-

1.Redefine the previous stated definition of 'femme fatale'
2.Go over homework assignment
3.Ask class if they have any questions!
