1.Students will gain an understanding of the culture, history, and literature related to Greek drama.

2.Students will read Oedipus Rex and Antigone

3.Students will write an expository essay comparing/contrasting the themes of these plays
 
4. Objectives-
1. Students will read the plays

2. Students will complete thinking maps related to various ideas in the literature
3. Students will write essays demonstrating understanding of these concepts
 
5. Materials and Aids-
literature book, thinking maps, computer/smart board for lecture notes, word processing for essays, dvd player for video enrichment lessons
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.power point/notes on Greek drama and festivals
 

B. Development-

1.show video clip of drama festival reenactment
2.discuss background information and how it relates to plays
 

C. Practice-

1.assign parts and read the play aloud
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.students will work on thinking maps to reinforce themes
2.students will complete handouts to measure understanding of the plays
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.some students will read in groups rather than independently (EC modifications)
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.comprehension quiz following each act of the plays
2.thinking maps will be checked
3.essays will be scored and given feedback
4. students will also complete projects related to this unit

1. finding real-life implications of this information

1.final test on the unit
