3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
Students will:
gain exposure to the central elements of the hero's journey monomyth.

Apply the elements of the hero's journey to a digital story

summarize the elements of the hero's journey in preparation for reading a more advanced text.
 
4. Objectives-
1. Students will learn and summarize elements of a hero's journey

2. Students will use Story Bird to create an original Hero's journey
 
5. Materials and Aids-
1. Heroes & Monsters of Greek Myth
2. Story Bird
3. List and explanation of elements of a Hero's journey
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Students have been reading Heroes & Monsters of Greek Myth. They have been introduced to the elements of a Hero's journey. Theseus and Perseus.

2. Next we have a discussion about two movies that they have seen, The Princess Bride and the Wizard of Oz. Students discuss what similar elements occur in each of these movies.

3. Allow for brief discussion within groups before letting students share their ideas.

4. Encourage students as they make connections (such as the presence of a central character who takes a journey, a series of adventures, magical elements, and so forth), but do not feel compelled to start labeling or guiding observations too directly at this point.

 

B. Development-

1. In a prior lesson students are taught the basics of the program Story Bird.

2. Teacher will demonstrate an original Hero Myth using Story Bird.

3. Teacher will ask students to work in a group to identify and discuss the elements of a Hero's journey in the teachers original story.
 

C. Practice-

1. Students are given a new teacher led Hero.
2. Each student is asked to create one frame using Story Bird to demonstrate one assigned element of the Hero's journey.
3. When each student has completed their one frame they will be viewed in order to view the story. The story may or may not make sense but it will give students practice with the concept and software.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students are asked to create and original Hero and Hero's journey.
2. Each student will use Story Bird to create their original story.
3. Each story should contain each element of a Hero's journey.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Some students may require further one to one assistance while using the new Software.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

Review each students original story to check for clarity and depth of understanding.
 

G. Closure-

At the end of the last session, further assess students' understanding by asking each student to put the elements of the hero's journey into their own words.
