A. Introduction-

1. Born in 1809 and died in 1892
2. Spokesperson for the Victorian Middle Class
3. His poetry mainly reflects many of the Victorian concerns and fear that new scientific theories and materialistic values were threatening accepted morality
4. 4th son of 12 children
5. His father was an alcoholic and took his frustrations on his wife and children
6. BY 18 he was a published poet
7. Attended Cambridge University, 1st year term he won a poetry contest
8. Met Arthur Henry Hallam and joined the apostles which was a group of gifted undergraduates
9. Left Cambridge in 1831 with out a degree because of his lack of funds
10. He Endured many difficulties such as financial troubles, scatting reviews, and an engagement complicated by his future wife's father
11. Hallam later became engaged to Tennyson's sister but died before it was consummated
12. Many of his greatest poems were inspired by his late friend
13. His poem In Memoriam was published in 1850 and 2 weeks later he married Emily Sellwood
14. Queen Victoria recognized his poetic achievements by inviting him to succeed William Wordsworth as a poet laureate
15. Decades after, he claimed title Baron and later the name lord
