1. The students will use story details to create a written prediction.
2. The students will predict what happens next in the story as it is read aloud.
3. The students will support their predictions in writing using facts from the story.
4. The students will record predictions on a leveled graphic organizer.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
On-Target Predictions graphic organizer, Predict-a-Plot graphic organizer, leveled prediction cards, anticipation guide, Imagine It!, smart notebook lesson, Internet practice site
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Hook - Have you ever read a book and guessed the ending? Have you ever watched a movie and known what would happen next?
2. Introduce indicator.
3. Ask students to share their definition of prediction. Come up with a definition as a class.
 

B. Development-

1. Smart notebook lesson on predictions.
2. Students practice making predictions smartboard with teacher direction and scaffolding.
3. Put students into groups for next activity.
 

C. Practice-

1. In groups students look at leveled prediction cards and use clues from the paragraphs to make predictions.
2. Students use answer key to grade their answers and discuss as a group.
3. Students turn in prediction cards and open books to page 108 in Imagine It! Daedulus and Icarus.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students complete anticipation guide.
2. When students finish, teacher builds background on story.
3. Together as a class read Daedalus and Icarus. On page 111 stop and have students complete leveled graphic organizer to make prediction.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Leveled prediction cards (3rd, 4th and 5th grade).
2. Leveled graphic organizers.
3. Leveled groups.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Group answers for prediction cards.
2. Informal observation.
 

G. Closure-

1. Re-visit indicator.
2. Make a prediction for tomorrow and the rest of the week based on the facts from today's lesson.
 
7. Evaluation-
1. Graphic organizer.
2. Entrance ticket (Thursday). Scenario given and student makes a logical prediction based on the facts in the paragraph.
