What is a prediction?

Vocabulary:
Prediction - To make a good guess about what will happen
Context Clues - Words from the title, author's previous works that students may be familiar with
Visual Clues - What does the cover of the book illustrate that might happen?
Fiction - Not a realistic story; fantasy
Nonfiction - Story based upon facts
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
Students will learn how to make an educated guess before reading a book.
Students will be able to determine whether or not their prediction was correct and why.
Students will be able to summarize story after reading.
 
4. Objectives-
Students will predict what will happen in the story.
Students will understand how to make predictions.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Book - "Milo and the Magical Stones" by Marcus Pfister (I chose this book because 1. it has two alternate endings for the students to predict and 2. most students are familiar with his other book "The Rainbow Fish.")

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

Describe a prediction.
Give an example of a good prediction.
Show book to class - write a one sentence summary on the classroom board of what the class as a whole thinks will happen during the story.
 

B. Development-

Hand out worksheet so the students can illustrate their prediction.
Read the story.
Ask students if their prediction was correct, why or why not?
Have students illustrate what actually happened in the story.
 

C. Practice-

Before reading the story, ask students for examples of good predications.
Elaborate more if necessary.
 

D. Independent Practice-

Illustrate individual predictions. (Allow approx. 10 minutes.)
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Help/demonstrate more if necessary.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

Check worksheets - did the students understand how to make a prediction?
 

G. Closure-

Summarize the story into one sentence - write underneath the initial prediction.
 
7. Evaluation-
Check worksheets. It will be obvious as to which students struggled. Work with them individually if necessary.
 
8. Teacher Reflection-
Students had a blast! They loved the alternate endings and trying to work as a class to guess what would happen. I highly recommend this lesson.
