Recalling Facts and Details |
Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
Students will be able to use the main idea in a passage to help
them identify important facts and details.
Objectives-
1. Students will be able to match important facts and details to
the connecting main idea.
2. Students will be able to go back into the text to answer questions
about important facts and details. |
Materials and Aids-
Sentence strips with main ideas or facts/details written on them,
facts and details worksheet for follow up |
Procedures/Methods-
A. Introduction-
1. Review of main idea (think-pair-share thoughts)-It is what the
passage is mostly about.
2. What supports the main idea?
B. Development-
Each student will be given a sentence strip with either a main idea
or an important fact/detail written on them. The students will be
given 5 minutes to find the main idea that matches with the details.
We will complete the first question on the follow up sheet as a class,
so that I can model a correct answer. |
C. Practice-
The assembled passages will be displayed on the dry erase board
and read aloud to the students.
Check- Do all the details relate to the main idea? Do any seem out
of place?
The students will be asked to complete a Facts and Details worksheet
asking them who, what, where, when, why, and how questions about the
assembled passages. They will be able to work in partners for this
activity. |
D. Independent Practice-
1. The students will complete page 10 from the Reading Skills workbook
to demonstrate understanding of the concept.
E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
1. Sentence strips vary in text difficulty, as do main ideas. Sentence
strips will be given out appropriately.
2. Students will be paired heterogeneously, so that stronger students
can support weaker students.
3. There will be two versions of the worksheet, one will require students
to write full sentences, the other will allow students who struggle
with writing to answer using a multiple choice format. |
F. Checking for understanding-
1. Informal assessments during the whole group practice.
2. Both worksheets will be turned in at the end of class for me to
review. |
G. Closure-
Using equity sticks I will call students to share the 6 main questions
that important details and facts answer. |
