1.Students will learn to make inferences when they read about a character based on little pieces of information.

2.Students will identify the main idea and supporting details in a short story.

3.Students will analyze setting, plot, theme, characterization, etc. in a particular short story.

4.Students will have a basic understanding of the elements of a story.

5.Students will participate in discussions and listen to other students comments.

5.Students will participate in self-directed work for a particular purpose.


 
4. Objectives-
1.Students will learn to identify and understand the elements in a short story.

2.Students will be able to successfully complete a story map, circle plot diagram, graphic map, concept map, or literary elements map on the web or hard copy.

3.Students will create a crossword puzzle test pertaining to the elements of literature, in general or relating to the short story read.

 
5. Materials and Aids-
Literary elements definition sheet (previously completed through investigation on the web.

Websites with descriptions of the elements of a story for review as needed for each student.

Websites and hard copies of short story previously read.

Pencil/pen

computer with web access

 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Studens will review vocabulary previously completed pertaining to the elements of a short story.

2.Discussion of Who, What, When, Where, How, and Why concerning the short story read.

3.Short discussion of how this relates to everyday life.
 

B. Development-

1.Students will be given a list of websites to assist them as needed.
-website for story read
-website for interactive maps, graphs, etc.
-website with elements explained for students to review/refresh themselves concerning elements of a short story.
 

C. Practice-

1.Do quick review of elements on list from websearch.

2.Discuss and complete lists on the board of Who, What, When, Where, How, and Why pertaining to the short story read. Relate these to the elements of a short story.

3.Discuss how this relates to their everyday lives.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Students will develop their own graphic organizer, story map, etc. pertaining to the story read.

2.Students will create a crossword puzzle pertaining to the elements of a short story-this may be in general terms or specific to the short story read.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Provide teacher assistance/student assistance for those who are not adept at using the Internet.

2.Review and discussion of the elements in order to help them become active learners. Participation of students and listening to ideas and suggestions of others. Needed for auditory learners.

3.Use of interactive visual graphics for visual learners.

3 Repetition of terms, how it relates to the story read, and how the terms relate to their individual lives from day to day.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Real life examples

2.Participation in discussions.

3.Correct completion of story map, graphic organizer, etc.

4.Creation of a crossword puzzle and completion of another student created puzzle.

 

G. Closure-

1.Review ideas discussed and projects completed.

2.Relate the elements to a story, movie, show, or personal experience.

3.Ask students to watch for the elements during a situation that takes place during the next few days, during a movie viewed, through a story they read, etc.
 
7. Evaluation-
1.Students will be assessed based on participation and completion of the charts.

2.Students will be assessed based on creation and completion of the crossword puzzle.

3.Discussion concerning any struggles they encountered in completing the charts, maps, etc.

4.Discussion of what they felt good about after completing the charts, maps, and classroom discussion concerning the elements of a short story.
