Similes & Metaphors
 
2. Content-
Students will build upon what they learned in Junior High regarding similes and metaphors, and will further develop their understanding through different activities that illustrate these literary devices. By the end of the unit, they should be able to recognize them in Literature as well as every day life,
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Learn and Be Able to recognize Similes/ Metaphors in every day life as well as in Literature
2. Read/Analyze Works of Literature and be able to recognize themes and meanings
3. Be able to discuss their points of view clearly and succinctly
 
4. Objectives-
1. Students will be asked to identify simile and metaphor in Stories, Songs, and in everyday interactions
2. They will be assigned projects to demonstrate their understanding of simile and metaphor
3. From these works of Literature, after recognizing the similes and metaphors within them, students should be able to interpret, analyze and expound upon themes, meanings and reactions
to the text. Through these analyses, students should be able to explain and justify their own opinions in-group discussions, as well as be able to critically interpret how these artistic avenues helped or hindered the writer's artistic vision.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Computer Use, Power Point, Song Lyric Handouts, Access to the Internet
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. As a means of Informal Assessment, students will be asked to provide examples of similes and metaphors using common objects in the classroom - IE (students should give examples like 'the chalkboard is as black as night')
 

B. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Because group work with be done in sets of four, students who have a less firm grasp on the lesson will be put into groups with other students who have a firmer grasp.
2. Understanding will be reinforced by watching the other presentations
