1.Students will learn that authors often want us to learn a lesson
we can apply to our own lives.
2. Students will learn to look for the author's purpose in a story.

|
1.Students will be able to identify one of the themes of the story.
2.Students will use one of the "theme starters" we discussed to write
a theme of the story in one or two sentences.

6. Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
1.Review:Identifying the theme of the story (lessons learned)
2.Play video: Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch |
|
|
B. Development-
1.Summarize the story with student input.(Since we were concentrating
on Theme, I wrote the summary ahead of time and saved it on the desktop.)
2.Read the summary.
3.Read theme starters and ask students to name ones they see in the
story. |

C. Practice-
Call on students to choose a theme starter and explain the lesson
they learned from the story.(Enlarge the page, choose a 2nd page,then
go to VIEW, ZOOM, DUAL PAGE to show both pages together- you can enlarge
and move back and forth between pages.
Write the theme starters named by students on the 2nd page. Theme
starters for this story could be: Love, Kindness, Friendship

D. Independent Practice-
Students write a theme in their own words using one of the theme
starter words.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
1.Teacher/Assistant will have student orally tell a lesson they
learned from the story, then repeat it for writing. Review what was
discussed earlier in lesson.
2.Students finishing quickly may write their own story summary.

F. Checking for understanding-
Students complete the graphic organizer independently. |

G. Closure-
1.Students share some of the lessons they learned in the story.
|
|
|
7. Evaluation-
|
Students have multiple opportunities to identify the theme of stories.
Compare understanding and progress. |
