Students will read, summarize, and discuss the novel Roll of Thunder,
Hear My Cry. |

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
|
1. Students will be able to read closely to determine what the text
says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific
textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn
from the text.

4. Objectives-
|
1. Students will be able to provide an objective summary of the
text.
2. Students will work effectively within a small group.
3. Students will use iMovie, Garage Band, and Explain Everything to
create paper slides and collaborative screen casts. |

6. Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
Explain that Roll of Thunder is a difficult text, and we will therefore
be using the three summarizing strategies learned in the fall.
|
|
|
B. Development-
Review three strategies for summarizing.
|
|
|
C. Practice-
All students will work in small groups to create summaries for the
first chapter of the story.
|
|
|
D. Independent Practice-
Students will have the opportunity to practice summarizing three
times (for three different chapters).
|
|
|
E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
1. Provide a graphic organizer with a blank for each step of the
SWBST strategy.
2. Preview strategies as needed.
3. Provide screen shots of steps for creating SWBST, paper slides,
and screen cast; students can readily refer to the steps as needed. |

F. Checking for understanding-
Teacher and peer feedback will be provided after each chapter.

|
|
G. Closure-
1. Brainstorm with kids how they could use the summarizing strategies
in the future.
2. Brainstorm with kids how they could use paper slides and screen
casts in the future. |

7. Evaluation-
|
Score each summary on a 4-point rubric (Exceeds Expectations, Meets
Expectations, Approaches Expectations, Does Not Meet Expectations)
designed with the students at the beginning of the unit. |
