The Canterbury Tales: The Prologue
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Students should be able to identify the different characters, Pilgrims, introduced in the prologue
2. Students should be able to describe their appearance.
3. Student's should be able to identify what the characters say about themselves and what the narrator says about them.
 
4. Objectives-
1. To understand the Middle English vernacular used by Chaucer.
2. To transfer these words/expressions into modern day English
3. To identify the differences between Pilgrims.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
British Literature Textbook
Pilgrims chart handout
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Have the students take out their textbooks
2. Have the students open them up to the Canterbury tales
3. Have the students take out the charts they started yesterday.
 

B. Development-

1. Explain the directions:
2. The pairs that worked together, yesterday, will come to the front of the room.
3. They will verbally, introduce their pilgrim. Identifying what they wrote in each box.
 

C. Practice-

1. I will call the pairs in order that the pilgrims are introduced in the text .
2. They will Identify their pilgrim
3. They will explain what they put in each box
 

D. Independent Practice-

Students at their desks will copy this information into their worksheet.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

(No student's in the class have an I.E.P.)
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. I will ask if everyone understands the middle English words/phrases that they do not understand
2. I will ask the presenting students to explain any words/ phrases that are in Middle English.
3. I will have the students try to identify the meaning of these words.
4. I will give the appropriate definitions if necessary.
 

G. Closure-

1. Identify when there is only minutes left
2. I will tell the students whose who did not go today will go on Monday.
 
7. Evaluation-
Will be evaluated on Friday with a matching test. Students will have to match the Pilgrim to their description.
