6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

Phonics review:
1. Review say it, move it mat rules.

Small group reading book "Florence Griffith Joyner".
1. Have students review what they know about the story.
2. Have students review their list of awards/medals they have won in their journals.
 

B. Development-

Phonics review
1.Have students watch a practice word. Then have them do a word together.

Small group reading book "Florence Griffith Joyner".
1. Have students read aloud as a group as you listen to them joining in when they are have difficulties.
2. Have students discuss the events leading up to Florence's gold medal run and list their ideas on the board.
 

C. Practice-

Phonics review:
1.Give each student a word to segment. As they are segmenting have the other students count the number of sounds, or identify the beg, middle, or end sounds.

Small group reading book "Florence Griffith Joyner".
1. Have students read the story aloud.
2. Create a flow map on the board of the events leading up to Florence's gold medal run from the ideas the students listed. Have them help you put them in order.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Have the students create their own flow map of their award/medal experience.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Phonics review:
1. Use words of varying difficulties

1. Help with spelling, generating ideas, and list sequencing words on the board for them to choice from.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Ask comprehension questions from back of the book to ensure story comprehension.
2.As students complete their flow map have them explain each step to ensure they understand how to sequence the events.

 

G. Closure-

Have students complete each activity by reviewing elements as a group.

Evaluation:
Phonics review:
1. As student segment or answer questions do an informal assessment to ensure understanding of the phonics skill. Review as needed.

Word fluency:
1. Record students words read correctly/ total words read and compare to previous day to ensure growth is being made. Record any noticeable errors.

1. As students read informally assess their reading fluency and basic reading skills. Stopping as needed to redirect.
2. Review students flow maps to ensure sequencing is in proper order and sequencing/transition words are used.
