2.TLW sort and read words with prefixes un-, re-, pre-, dis-.
3.TLW apply knowledge of letter-sounds and word parts to decode unknown words when reading.
4.TLW practice fluency when reading in a group.
5.TLW use graphic organizers.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Kitten Rescue Chart, Decodable Reader 22, paper, pencils, Reading Text Book, Reading Teacher's Edition, football field game board, prefix word cards, suffix word cards, game markers.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. TTW read the Kitten Rescue Chart aloud to class and then have class read it.
3. TLW take turns circling the words with prefixes on the chart.

 

B. Development-

1. TTW guide students through making a graphic organizer to sort the words with prefixes. An example will be displayed.
2. We will sort the words we found in the Kitten Rescue Chart.
3. As a group, we will read the Decodable Reader.
4. TTW ask the students to retell the story to check for comprehension.
5. TLW work with a partner to locate with words with prefixes.
6. TLW sort the words by using their graphic organizer.
7. As a class, we will go over the sorted words by writing them on the displayed graphic organizer.
 

C. Practice-

1.TTW give directions on how to play Phonics Football.
2.TLW play Phonics Football with a partner using words with prefixes.
3.TLW determine whether the words have a prefix, and if it does they advance in the game.
4. TTW monitor and guide this activity.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. TLW use our weekly story, "One Dark Night", in their reading book to find words with prefixes.
2. TLW write the words with prefixes in their graphic organizer to sort the words.
3. TTW collect the graphic organizer to evaluate progress.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Strategic Intervention: Use "Monitor Progress" on TE p. 180o during group time to see if they need additional practice with prefixes. If so, use reteaching/review resources.
2.Advanced: Determine if these students would benefit from this instruction by using the "Monitor Progress".
3. ELL: TTW support phonics by teaching the blending strategy.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. TTW observe progress of each student during the Phonics Football game.
2. TTW check the completed graphic organizer.
3. TTW observe students when working with partners to find words with prefixes for their graphic organizer.
 

G. Closure-

1. TTW ask each student to say a word with a prefix.
2. TTW ask the class what they learned today about prefixes.
 
7. Evaluation-
TTW use the completed graphic organizer as a measure of progress.
