6. Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
1.Introduce the unit by having the class begin a KWL about poetry.
2.Hold class discussion and discuss what they already know and want
to know.
3.Hand out vocabulary worksheet at the end of class and assign it
as homework. |

B. Development-
1.Teach a lesson about the most famous poets and their poetry.
2.Introduce the class to Derrick Brown (my favorite poet) and have
the class start thinking about who their favorite poet is. |
|
|
C. Practice-
1.Have students select a favorite poet or poem.
2.Help build their understanding of the poem by assigning them to
dissect it. Explain what it is they like about the poem or poet.
3.Read these poems in class and have a discussion so students can
figure out the poem's meaning together.

D. Independent Practice-
1.Have the students copy the style of their favorite poet and create
an original poem.
2.Along with the poem, write a short explanation of how their poem
reflects one written by their favorite poet.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
1.Students having difficulty with the creative portion of this unit
can meet with me outside of class for extra help.
|
|
|
F. Checking for understanding-
1.Exit slips will need to be handed in at the end of class. On this
exit slip, students will have to answer a question and ask one about
the lesson taught that day.
2.Weekly five point quizzes.

G. Closure-
A final presentation presenting their original poem before the class.
