3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
Students will develop a greater understanding of the impact word choice has in writing.
 
4. Objectives-
1.Students will be able to use descriptive words to help the audience form a mental picture
2.Students will be able to write a Haiku with correct lines and syllables
3.Students will be able to work in small groups
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Smart Board (optional), handouts, chart paper
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Introduce Haiku poems using a concept web
2.Discuss how word choice impacts the reader's experience with a poem
 

B. Development-

1.Provide handout of various Haiku poems with and without descriptive wording to compare
2.Discuss the images formed when descriptive wording is used
3.Note how the title can serve as the topic
 

C. Practice-

1.Work as a whole class to replacement words for the poem without imagery
2.Practice changing the wording to improve the imagery in the poem, keeping with the format of a Haiku
3. Discuss the impact this change has on the reader
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Group students (4-5 in a group)
2. Groups are to select a topic (2 min.)
3.Groups are to generate a word list (4 min)
4. Groups are to write a Haiku focusing on word choice to "paint a picture" in the readers mind (10 min)
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Groups of students should be heterogeneous
2.Teacher will meet with groups to motivate/inspire ideas if group is stuck
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Groups will share their poems, omitting the title
2.Other groups will guess the title of the poem based on descriptive word choice used within the poem
 

G. Closure-

1.Remind students that word choice in any written assignment adds to the quality and helps engage the reader
2.Provide posters (optional for homeroom teacher if wanted for extension activity)
 
7. Evaluation-
1.Check for imagery created through word choice
2.Check for understanding of Haiku format
