3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.1.3 Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.1.7 Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.1.9 Compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in stories.

4. Objectives-
1. Recognize and describe characters, settings, and main events in a story by using key details.
2. Differentiate characters by comparing and contrasting adventures and experiences of characters in stories
3. Demonstrate an understanding of graphic organizers by completing Venn Diagram, Similar Different Chart, and Double Bubble Map worksheets.

5. Materials and Aids-
Teacher:
Big Book Short Story, SmartBoard, graphic organizer template (located on SmartBoard)

Students:
Graphic organizer worksheets, writing utensil, short story book for each group, blank numbered worksheet for anticipatory set.

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

Activating the strategy....
teacher will direct students to "talk with your partner". Partners will first discuss ways in which they are similar (hair or eye color, age, have pets, etc) and then ways in which they are different. Students will write their characteristics down on a piece of paper and save it for next activity.

B. Development-

Day One: Instruction
The teacher will explain why comparing and contrasting is an important skill that we must learn to be good readers. The teacher will show students two objects or two people. As a class we will compare and contrast pictures or objects using a Venn diagram, the "Similar Different Chart" or Double Bubble Map. We will compare using illustrations and key details in a story.

C. Practice-

Day One/Two: Modeled Instruction
Once students show understanding of graphic organizers, teacher and students will work together as a class to make a list of features describing characters, their adventures, and experiences in a short story we will read aloud in class. Teacher will model this on the SmartBoard using different types of graphic organizers. Teacher will call on students to give examples.

D. Independent Practice-

Day Two/Three: Practicing Skill
Upon further understanding (teacher will decide when class is able to move forward) students will use their Venn Diagram Work Sheet and compare and contrast the characters in small groups. Students will use a short story the class has read together, and will each have a short story on their desk to look back on. The teacher will walk around making sure each group understands the activity, and is working together.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Teacher will have different worksheets (types of graphic organizers, from the most basic to the more advanced) for different levels of understanding. Teacher will also assist individuals who need extra help during group work.

F. Checking for understanding-

Each student group will choose an expert, who will tell the teacher what to fill in on their empty class Venn Diagram located on the SmartBoard. This will allow teacher further evidence that the groups and students understand how to compare and contrast characters in a short story. Students will also hand in their graphic organizer worksheets to teacher at the end of lesson.

G. Closure-

Teacher will ask class to answer prompt students with questions out loud using their graphic organizers. Examples may be:
How are ______ and _____ alike?
How are _______ and ________ different?
