3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Students will be able to generate main ideas and details pertaining to a specific topic and evaluate them to ensure they support the topic.
 
4. Objectives-
1.Students will be able to identify the main ideas of a picture and give details that support the main idea.
2. When given written details, the students will be able to identify the main idea related to the given details
3.When given a paragraph with main ideas and details, the students will be able to identify which detail(s) do not fit within the paragraph.
4. When given a topic, students will be able to generate main ideas and details related to the given topic.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
LCD Projector
Powerpoint
Sentence Strips
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Show pictures and ask students to identify the main idea within their teams.
2.Write main ideas on sentence strips
3. Discuss how they knew it was the main idea. Generate supporting details on the board.
 

B. Development-

1.Students will be given supporting details and asked to identify the main idea associated with the details.
2.They will write the main idea on sentence strips.
3. They students will be shown a picture of a farm. The picture will include details that do not fit. The students will be asked to identify the details that do not fit in the picture.
4. This concept will be related to paragraph writing. The students will then be given paragraphs and asked to identify the detail(s) that do not fit within the paragraph.
 

C. Practice-

Students will be given 3 topics in picture prompt format and asked to identify main ideas and details that pertain to the topic.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students will be given a topic and asked to identify main ideas and details related to the topic. (Native Americans)
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Small group instruction
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Teacher will monitor and give feedback to students as they generate their main ideas/details to ensure that the details really support the main idea.
 

G. Closure-

Students write on sentence strips what they found
 
7. Evaluation-
1.Outline an essay about Native Americans. Identify Main Ideas and Details that support the topic.
2.Use the outline to write the essay with emphasis on support paragraphs that maintain focus on the main idea.
