3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Students will use Internet literacy skills to locate a biography website.
2. Students will use nonfiction reading strategies to locate important information on selected person.
3. Students will use skimming and scanning skills to move quickly through the online document.
 
4. Objectives-
1. Students will select a person to research.
2. Students will determine the important facts about their selected person(s).
3. Students will complete a mini-research in the form of a graphic organizer.

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Students will use their reader's notebook to record their reading time and respond to a journal prompt.
2. "Teen 911" will be read aloud and discussed.
3. Students will log in and locate the biography website: biography.com (bio4kids).

 

B. Development-

Teacher will review the steps to the biography website, using the projector, and remind students how to use the page features.

 

C. Practice-

1. Students will locate the website and continue their research from Friday's lesson.
2. Teacher will roam and monitor appropriate site use and person selection.

 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students will use the biography packet complete research on their selected person(s).
2. Teacher will monitor progress as students work independently.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Most students will complete research on two people.
2. Some students will complete one search on a selected person.
3. Students needing additional help will receive one-on-one instruction.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Teacher will monitor progress during class period as students work independently.
2. Students will use their information in additional assignments.
 

G. Closure-

Students will be able to browse the biography/autobiography cart for their next round of research.
 
7. Evaluation-
1. Student researched at least one person and recorded the important information in their graphic organizer.
2. Student can state the significance of their researched person-how they contribute to society.
