3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
|
1. Students will hopefully glean the meaning of the various themes
that stories may encumber.
2. Students will learn how to pick out literary themes in music.
3. Students will be able to relate what they've read to the music
they listen to on a daily basis. |

4. Objectives-
|
1. Students will learn how to work within groups.
2. Each group will discover how to bounce ideas off of different teachers
-- not just the general educator.
3. Students will learn how to respect each other and the opinions
and ideas each student comes up with. |

5. Materials and Aids-
|
-Chicken Soup for the Teen-Aged Soul
-Two large Post-It Notes
-Markers
-CD player, Tape player and iPod speaker
|
| |
|
6. Procedures/Methods-
|
|
A. Introduction-
1. Students will need to have read all four of the required readings
to understand the following instruction.
2. Students will be split up into two groups.
3. Each group will rotate between two teachers (one general education
teacher and one special education teacher). |

B. Development-
1. The first group will conference with the general educator about
the different themes that can be found within the novel.
2. The second group will discuss themes and how different songs can
encompass these themes.

|
|
C. Practice-
1. Once students have grouped together and met with each teacher,
they will need to write down their themes on one large post-it note
and songs on the other.
2. Students will need to copy down the information into their notes
so they may refer back to them when finishing their homework for the
following day.

D. Independent Practice-
1. Students will need to concentrate on one theme from the book
and relate it back to their lives.
2. Once the student has chosen one of the assigned readings and themes,
they will need to find a song that illustrates said theme. The song
may reflect the story or their own memory from the theme they have
chosen.
3. Students are required to write a one page reflection paper as to
why they chose their song/theme and how it relates to something that
has happened in their own lives.
4. Students will need to bring the song (on either a CD, tape or iPod)
to class and play it for all the other students in class. |

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
1. Students who need extra help will be able to use class time and
classroom resources to complete the homework assignment.
2. Students who have difficulty completing the assignment will be
given extra time and will be allowed to ask for help from either teacher.
3. If students need a quieter environment, they will be encouraged
to use the library or a resource room. |

F. Checking for understanding-
1. Students will required to bring their CD, tape or iPod into class
so that they may share with the rest of the students.
2. After playing said song, the student will be asked to give a brief
synopsis on their theme and how it relates to themselves.
3. If students are uncomfortable speaking in front of the class, they
will be persuaded to deliver a quick clip of the song and short speech
to the teacher before or after class. |

| Every student will hand in their papers before the end of class. |
