Students will be able to understand the importance of story elements through identifying passages that indicate setting, characters, and problem/solution.

1. Students should be able to identify story elements in a stories and in their own writing.
2. Students should be able to effectively use the story elements to create their own stories.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
The book, "Where the Wild Things Are"
large sheets of paper
computer/projector
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Good Morning Students
2. Go over the day's agenda
 

B. Development-

1. Introduce the book to students and show them the Ask them what they think the story might be about.
2. Read the book to the class.
3. Assess whether their initial reactions to the book matched the ones after they knew what the book was about.
4. Explain the elements of a story through a PowerPoint.
5. refer back to the book and explain to students that without one of the story elements, the story cannot be complete.
 

C. Practice-

1. Label 4 large sheets of paper: Characters, Setting, Problem, and Solution.
2. As a class, allow students to pick out the details in the story that tell us the story elements.
3. Leave these papers up so students can refer back to them at any point.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Label for more large sheets of paper: Characters, Setting, Problem, and Solution.
2. Write down on the sheets of paper different settings, characters, and etc.
3. Students are creating their own stories using the story elements.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Help will be given when/if needed.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Evaluate the students responses to their own "copycat" story and assess whether you think they have a clear understanding of the story elements.
2. Allow students to put together their copycat story in the upcoming days and allow each students to add details to make their story complete.
 

G. Closure-

1. Ask if there are questions.
2. Tell them that they will each be creating their own stories based on their "copycat" class story.
