3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
|
CCSS RI 2.2 Identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text as
well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text. |

4. Objectives-
|
1.Students will be able to identify the important words in three
individual paragraphs.
2.Students will be able to identify the main idea in three individual
paragraphs.
3. Students will be able to identify the main idea of a multi-paragraph
passage.

|
5. Materials and Aids-
|
What's the Main Idea sheet (teacher only)
The Beautiful Butterfly
Graphic organizer
Pencils
Highlighters if available. |

|
6. Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
1. Introduce the topic by telling the students the main goal.
2. Review the two vocabulary words with the students.
3. Ask questions about the topic to activate any prior knowledge.
4.Read one of the paragraphs on "What is the Main Idea" sheet.
5. Make sure students understand all vocabulary in
paragraph.
6.Ask students to identify the main idea after giving them four choices
to choose from.
7. If students are struggling repeat steps 1-3 with another paragraph. |

B. Development-
1.Pass out the Beautiful Butterfly to students.
2. Read the passage to students, stopping to check for understanding.
3.Introduce graphic organizer to students. Explain its function.
4.Teacher or a student rereads paragraph one on organizer.
5.Teacher will model for students the thinking process for determining
important words and determining main idea of passage.
6. Students will highlight or underline the important words or phrases
as teacher identifies them. |

C. Practice-
1. Student or teacher will read passage two.
2. Whole class students and teacher will determine what the important
words are and highlight or underline the words or phrases. |

|
D. Independent Practice-
1. Students will independently read paragraph three.
2. Students will highlight or underline the important words or phrases.
3. Students will identify the topic of the passage.
4. Come back as a whole class and discuss what the students thought
the important words or phrases were and what the topic of the paragraph
was.
5. As a whole class determine what the topic of the whole writing
piece was. |

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
1. The teacher will read for or support any student having difficulty
with the text.
2.Teacher will circulated among the students checking for individual
understanding providing more individualized instruction if needed.

F. Checking for understanding-
1. Throughout the lesson teacher will stop and ask questions to
check for understanding.
2.The teacher will look for non verbal clues that a student does or
does not understand lesson.
3.Informal assessment using third paragraph. Teacher will listen to
individual answers and circulate through the students to read their
work. |

G. Closure-
1. Ask students to explain what a main idea is. If necessary briefly
put it into words for them.
2. If time read one more paragraph from "What's the Main Idea". |

7. Evaluation-
|
Teacher will evaluated the lesson based upon the students level
of performance and general understanding of the topic.
