3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Student will be able to complete a graphic organizer while reading.
2.Student will be able to use graphic organizer to demonstrate comprehension of text in a writing piece.
3.Student will be able to make predictions about the text using a pre-reading organizer.
 
4. Objectives-
1.Student can find one key fact independently.
2.Student can write 2-3 sentences on topic.
3.Student can answer at least one question about the text without adult assistance.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
computers, pre-reading organizer, google doc organizer, Firefighters books at level F and J
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1 Explain to students why we use tools to help us understand text we read.
2. Remind students how we have looked before and made best guesses about what might happen in story.
 

B. Development-

1.Model pre-reading organizer with a different book
2.Model filling in key facts during reading
 

C. Practice-

1.Read aloud a few pages from model book
2.Reminders to stop and note key ideas or key facts in story.
3. Write small summary together.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students read Firefighters book at their reading level
2.Reminders to stop and note key ideas or key facts in story.
3..Provide prompts as needed to build confidence.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Varying levels for reading.
2. Word bank provided for specific student
3.Speech to text software for writing activity.
4. White board for challenging words.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Writing response to demonstrate understanding of text.
2.Ability to answer at least one comprehension question verbally.
3.References graphic organizer for responses.
 

G. Closure-

1.Recap what tools were used today and how we can use them to help us in reading.
2.Mention how we will be using this model again for fictional reading and what other pieces we may include for next time.
 
7. Evaluation-
Students will complete graphic organizer with some independence (as of now it has been all teacher led and prompted) Students will begin to tell the main idea or retell story back to peers and teacher.
