2.For students to understand there is more than one meaning for some words.

1.Students correctly identify the meaning of a word through the use of antonyms, synonyms, homophones, and homographs
2.Use context skills to correctly identify the meaning of words within sentences.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Smart Board
Projector/ Screen
PowerPoint Jeopardy game
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Do you think all words only have one meaning? (wait for response)
2. Actually many words have more then one meaning, and sometimes sound the same but are spelled different. For example sea, as in the ocean sounds the same as see as in sight, but they are not spelled the same.
3. Today we are going to explore words with different sounds and meanings while playing Jeopardy.
 

B. Development-

1. First your group will pick a category: antonym, synonyms, homophones, or homographs
2. Pick the value you wish and a word will appear.
3.Next you will try to give the correct meaning of the word shown based off of the category.
 

C. Practice-

1.Class will participate in a game of Jeopardy and will be separated into groups.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Students will be given a worksheet with five words listed.
2. They will write the antonym, synonym, homophone, and homograph of the word.
3.For extra credit students can pick one word from the list and choose the meaning and write a sentence for that word.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Placing students in groups that are mixed with higher and lower level students to encourage student interaction and allow students to help each other learn.

 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Grading the worksheet provided after the game.
2. Uses the worksheet as a tool to ensure that students can properly use these skills.
 

G. Closure-

1. Explain again that words have different meaning and sounds.
2. Explain how the use of antonyms, synonyms, homophones, and homographs will help them in the future to understand the meaning of some words.
