Learning new vocabulary words
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Students will be able to use new vocabulary in the context of writing.
2. Students will be able to define new vocabulary words.
3. Students will engage in the act of cooperative learning in order to define new words.
 
4. Objectives-
1. Correctly use new vocabulary words in the context of a written sentence.
2. Recall and use 10 new vocabulary words in a vocabulary test at the end of the week.
3. Demonstrate an eagerness to learn new words by being prepared with a new word and definition at the beginning of class each Monday.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Smartphone with memo or note pad.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Have students come into class with a new word that they discovered in the past week.
2. Explain how the word will be used for the activity and that the class is going to be creating their own dictionary.
 

B. Development-

1. Explain the use of the memo/note pad on students phones and how to add to them.
2. Demonstrate how convenient it is for clarity purposes and to save time to construct definitions and examples on the phone so that they can be sent in to the teacher.
3. Give an example of a sample word and what is expected of the students during the activity.
 

C. Practice-

1. Students will sit in a circle and start with their phone in their hand, opened to the memo/note pad with their chosen word of the week with its definition on display.
2. The teacher will play classical music while the students pass their phones around the circle. Once the teacher stops the music, the student will read the word on the phone in their hand and add to the memo pad an example of how the word can be used in an everyday sentence. This process will repeat itself multiple times depending on how many students are in the class.
3. By the end of the day, students are expected to send an e-mail to the teacher of what was constructed on their memo/note pad.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Make sure students are consistently brining in a new word on their phone with the definition from week to week.
2. Have each student place their name at the end of the their example sentence to monitor who has written one and who has not.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Students will have time to acquaint themselves to the different types of phones being used so that they are not overwhelmed by the technology.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. At the end of the week the teacher will create a quiz using the words that were sent to the teacher in an e-mail.
2. The quiz will require students to demonstrate knowledge of the definition and understanding of how to use the word in a sentence.
 

G. Closure-

1. Each weekly quiz will represent the wrap up of each week however the activity will begin again with new words at the beginning of each week.
 
7. Evaluation-
1. Are students actually retaining the words past the first week?
2. Are students using each others phones respectfully?
