1. Topic-

Spelling Words for the Week

 
2. Content-
Each week the students are given ten spelling words. These ten spelling words are first reviewed in class, and then as the week progresses, the spelling words are incorporated into their homework.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Students will be able to spell these words on their own.
2. Students will be able to use these words in sentences.
 
4. Objectives-
1. Go over the ten words.
2. Work at a slow pace.
3. 3 words a day.
4. Students will be tested on spelling words at the end of the week.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Spelling cards, Flash cards, White Sharpie Marker,
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Chapter 1 spelling words
2. On Monday during spelling, the spelling words will be placed on the weekly wall by the students.
 

B. Development-

Chapter 1 Spelling Words would include:
1. stamp
2. jump
3. snack
4. mess
5. pond
6. date
7. rose
8. lake
9. grade
10. smile
 

C. Practice-

1. Practice in their spelling workbooks.
2. Practice on the computers with programs that help to sound out the words and spell them.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Re-write the word three times in their spelling notebooks.
2. The first time they trace over the word on the first line. The second time they write it on their own.
3. The last time they write it on their own.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.We use the easel to place the Flashcards on it with magnets.
2.Each flash card has one spelling word written on it.
3. The spelling words are broken down into two cards to hell with pronunciation.
For example:
Chapter.
On the Flashcards I would have wrote,
"Chap"on one and "ter" on the other to show how its pronounced as well as spelled.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. After the students and I read aloud the directions in the workbook for the weeks spelling words, they have about 15 to 20 minutes to complete the exercise.
2.Once we go over the exercise, I walk around to make sure everyone completed it.
3.If completed, I place a red star on their paper.
 

G. Closure-

1.Homework assignments help them practice their spelling words to prepare them for their spelling test at the end of the week.
2.Homework assignments are completed in their spelling workbooks.
The assignments include:
1. 3x each, for each word.
2. 10 sentences, 1 sentence per word.
 
7. Evaluation-
1.Test on the Friday after all spelling activities are completed.
 
8. Teacher Reflection-
Judging on the grades that the students receive on the tests lets me know how well they understand the words and if their all moving at the same pace/level. It often helps me to know which students need more work, and which exercises I need to expand on.
