6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

Write preheat on the board, and then ask students if anyone has ever preheated an oven or stove at home or has seen a parent do it. Have students explain what they did.
 

B. Development-

1. Review what a prefix is and what a root word is.

2. Write pre- on the board and have students write it in their notebooks.

3. Define the prefix pre-: earlier or before.

4. Define preheat: to heat beforehand.

5. Point out where the letters pre- are in the word to show that it comes in the beginning. Also explain that the root word will come right after the prefix.

6. Tell students to make sure to define both the root word and prefix in order to determine the definition of the word.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Give the students a list of words with the prefix pre-and ask them to predict what they think that word means.

2. Once they have made their predictions they will use a dictionary to check if their definitions were correct.
If they were, they can put a start next to the word, if they weren't then they can write the correct definition from the dictionary.

3. Walk around to make sure the students are doing the exercise correctly. If they are, the teacher can give the student positive reinforcements, if they are not doing it correctly the teacher can reiterate the directions and then help them adjust their work, so they are doing it correctly.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. For students that need it, modify the list to 5 words not 10 for both the independent practice and quiz.

2. Read the words to the students who need it read aloud to them.

3. Pair up students that need extra help with a student that understands the concept.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Walk around the room to monitor independent practice.

2. Half way through the lesson, ask class what there answer was for the first two words.

1. Review the definitions of the following:

Give the following quiz:

Ask students if they can come up with any more words with the prefix pre- and define them.
