2. Content-
|
What is vocabulary? It is a set of words that make up a language.
We will try to focus on finding the right words to use to communicate
with each other. |

|
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
|
1.Start a starter list for increasing the number of words you know.
2.Read,read,read. - It doesn't matter what you read - magazines, comics,
novels, web pages, etc.
3.Look it up. When you come across a word you don't know when you
read, look it up in a dictionary. |
|
|
4. Objectives-
|
1.To find ways to increase your vocabulary.
2.To learn new words and meanings by using word solving strategies(compound
words, word origins, homophone sets).
3.Recognize and use word parts(prefixes, suffixes, inflectional ending) |
|
|
5. Materials and Aids-
|
Dictionary, any books, magazines, comics, reading materials.
Computer with projector for PowerPoint presentations. |

6. Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
1.Have you ever wanted to explain something to someone, but you
just couldn't find the right words? It would help to know more words
so you could express yourself better.
2.Knowing more vocabulary words will make you understand what you
read.
3.Knowing more words will also improve your ability to communicate
through speaking, listening, and writing. |

B. Development-
1.Read, read, read. Read whatever interests you whether is is a
comic book, short story, magazines (celebrity, music, sports, etc.)
2.Look it up. If you come up on words you don't know, look it up in
the dictionary and start your own word list.
3.Play word games.(Crossword puzzles, jumbles in newspaper, scrabble,
etc. Have fun with words. |

C. Practice-
1.Say it out loud.
2.Use the word in a sentence.
3.Find similar words with the same meanings. (Synonyms) |
|
|
D. Independent Practice-
1.Have the students write the word and the meanings.
2.Describe words with the same meaning.
3.Use it in a sentence or write a report using the new words. |
|
|
E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
1.Start with traditional method of lecture and questions.
2.Divide into groups of three or four students and start a vocabulary
list.
3.Ask each group to share with the other groups their word lists and
add new words from the other lists. |
|
|
F. Checking for understanding-
1.Make oral assessments by asking each student to name one word
and the meaning that they learned in today's lesson. It can't be the
same word already mentioned.
2.Have another student use it in a sentence.
3.Have another student spell the new word on the board. |
|
|
G. Closure-
1.Emphasize to students that reading is a very important way to
increase your vocabulary. Make it a habit to read something every
day whether it is the newspaper, or listen to the news, or even watch
TV or Internet to look for new words and its meaning to increase your
vocabulary.
2.Learning never ends. You will always listen to the radio, watch
TV, video, movies, and will always encounter new words. If you are
not sure of the meaning, just look it up in the dictionary. |

7. Evaluation-
|
1.For homework, have the students list ten new words and meanings
and use each word in a sentence.
2.Go over the words to prepare for an assessment test on what they
learned in class for the next meeting. |

8. Teacher Reflection-
|
Find which was the most effective method which enhanced student
learning and incorporate more of that strategy for the next time. |
