1. Topic-
Academic English Writing Semester Plan
 
2. Content-
This course will teach writing skills required by students to attend Senior Middle Schools in America or other English speaking countries.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Introduce the concept and importance of the written outline.
2. Develop the students ability to write grammatically correct sentences, paragraphs and essays.
3. Teach students the habits and techniques necessary to write effectively for an all English classroom
4. Students will learn the correct format and styles of several common essay types
 
4. Objectives-
By semester end students should be able to do the following:
1. Time management in relation to in class and homework written assignments
2. Organization of thoughts and ideas in order to effectively communicate those ideas in written form (English)
3. Ability to write up to a 1000 word essay on any topic or theme.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
- Treasures Reading textbook
- Teacher created worksheets and quizzes
- Homework and in-class assignments and essays
- Midterm and Final Examination
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Classroom rules and policy
2. The outline and it's importance in academic writing
3. Proper form and format of academic essays
 

B. Development-

1. Sample essays and writings showing correct written form
2. Sample outlines showing correct written form
3. Samples of different types and styles of academic writing
 

C. Practice-

1. In class assignments on organizing topics, outlines, sentences, paragraphs and essays
2. Classroom discussions on the importance of organization and creative thinking
3. Quizzes and in-class written assignments to gauge student progress and understanding
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Sample essays and writings to be read by students as homework
2. Weekly and monthly sentence, paragraph and essay homework assignments to be completed and graded
 

Checking for understanding-

1. Pop quizzes and short in class written assignments
2. Monthly in class quizzes and written assignments based on recent topics
3. Midterm and Final examinations in essay format to be completed in class
 

Closure-

1. Overall goal is to provide students with the ability to produce high quality, well organized and grammatically correct writing in order to achieve success in English only learning environments
2. Provide students with skills such as outlines, essay types and formats and creativity in writing
 
7. Evaluation-
1. 10% of final grade determined by overall attendance, participation and attitude in class
2. 20% of final grade determined by in class quizzes, essays and assignments
3. 30% of final grade determined by midterm examination (essay)
4. 50% of final grade determined by final examination (essay)
 
8. Teacher Reflection-
A mixed group with varied written and English skills. Pay close attention to struggling students and make effective use of Power Hour.
