3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Students will be able to identify elements of a narrative and storyboard.
2. Students will be able to describe a sequence of events
3. Students will be able to develop a draft story board for their Digital Story
 
4. Materials and Aids-
Materials needed are the following:
Scissors, glue, coloring utensils, paper, comic strips, storyboard template
 
5. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Define what a narrative is and how it relates to the digital storytelling process
2. Discuss the importance of breaking the narrative into sections, which are called storyboard.
3. Introduce the components of a quality storyboard: i.e. narrative, location, equipment, shot list, suggested camera angles
 

B. Development-

1. Watch a digital story and identify the main parts of the story. Answer the following questions:
What happened in the beginning, middle, and end?
What was the story about?
What did you enjoy about the story, either in the narrative or the visuals?
How would you break this story into sections?
2. From the class input, the instructor will draw out the different parts of the story and will demonstrate the process of sequencing.

C. Practice-

Instructor will read the nursery rhyme of Jack and Jill. The students will be instructed to create a storyboard based on the narrative.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Activity 1: Students will get newspaper clippings of a comic strip out of order. As a group of 2-3, the students will sort the clippings in the correct order.
Skills needed to complete assignment: students will need to describe what is happening in each clipping.
Students will need to identify the relationships between the images.
Students need understand the components of a narrative in order to sort the clippings in the correct order.
2. Activity 2: Students in their groups will create a short narrative that has a beginning, middle, and end. The narrative will include at least two characters, a conflict, a resolution, and dialogue.
Skills needed to complete assignment:
students will need to understand the components of a narrative.
Students will need to collaborate in writing the the narrative and ensure that it includes all the necessary elements.
3. Activity 3: Students will transform their short narrative into a storyboard. Students will discuss how the narrative should look and begin to develop a visual representation.
Skills needed to complete this assignment:
students will need to discuss how the narrative should look.
Students will need to identify the main parts of the narrative to into their storyboard.
Student will need need to have a good understanding of sequencing in order to arrange the visuals in an order that compliments the narrative.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Activity 1: Groups will be assessed on how well they are able to associate an independent scene with another independent scene to identify relationships and create a sequence of events.
2. Activity 2:Groups will be assessed on their ability to take a story and create a visual representation. Attention will be on identifying and creating a visual representation of the important components of the story.
3.Activity 3: Students will be assessed on their ability to work together and develop a short story that has all the components of a story. Groups will be assessed on their ability to create an visual representation of the story in the a sequential order that compliments the story.
 

G. Closure-

Review key concepts learned and how they are related to the pre-production process of their digital story.
