Students will be able to plan and draft an expository essay based on personal experience.
 
4. Objectives-
1. Students will be able to analyze an expository prompt for key words.
2. Students will be able to construct a focus sentence within a reasonable amount of time.
3. Students will be able to elaborate on a main idea sentence.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Elmo, various expository prompts, sentence starters, paper, cloze procedure prompts for students to complete, timer.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

Discuss going to McDonald's for a plain burger vs. a Big Mac
 

B. Development-

Show students the Burger Plan sheet and discuss various parts (focus statement, Meaty middles, take away ending)
 

C. Practice-

1. Students practice daily creating a Burger Plan sheet in a timely manner.
2. Students will practice stating the key words from a variety of prompts (words that are repeated within the prompt).
3. Orally practice replacing personal feelings, thoughts within the cloze main idea cards.
 

D. Independent Practice-

Students will replace personal feelings/thoughts within the cloze main idea cards within a timely manner.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Small group instruction
2. Graphic organizer
3. Use of highlighter for key information.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

Students produce Burger Plan sheet independently.
 

G. Closure-

1. Verbally discuss how planning can aide in our overall writing.
2. Review the pieces of the Burger Plan Sheet.
 
7. Evaluation-
Thursday students will take a schoolwide expository prompt.
