to be a hero

from teacher edition. |

6. Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
1. "What is a hero" Discuss what makes a hero and who their hero's
are.
2. Discuss whether or not MLK is a hero why or why not and discuss
the student's opinions.

B. Development-
1. Share pg. 328-329 with students and discuss features (indention,
# of paragraphs, expository/narrative)
2. Share the FCAT writer's checklists with students.
3. Create a web or plan sheet about their own hero
4. Formal/ Informal Language 329A transparency. |

C. Practice-
1. Revise their webs (proofread/edit their writing)
2. Draft a sloppy copy using their web and the "Writer in Control"
format on prompt "Explain why XXX is your hero".

D. Independent Practice-
1. Prompt should have a focus statement, two transitional devices,
and a take away ending.
2. Each of the two transitional sentences should contain a main idea
statement.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

F. Checking for understanding-
Students will receive oral and written feedback about their assignments.

Students will share their hero essay with class orally.

|
Prompt will be scored by teacher using a 1-6 rubric.

8. Teacher Reflection-
|
If time permits, students should draft a friendly letter to their
hero explaining why that person is their hero. |
