Writing a friendly letter with a topic sentence, main ideas, details, and transitional phrases.

4. Objectives-
1. Students will relate author's purpose to written expression.
2. Students will plan/brainstorm about their hero and what it takes to be a hero
3. Students will draft an essay about their hero.
4. Students will draft a friendly letter.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Elmo, sentence starters, paper, FCAT writer's checklist, Pg. 328/329 from teacher edition.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. "What is a hero" Discuss what makes a hero and who their hero's are.
2. Discuss whether or not MLK is a hero why or why not and discuss the student's opinions.

B. Development-

1. Share pg. 328-329 with students and discuss features (indention, # of paragraphs, expository/narrative)
2. Share the FCAT writer's checklists with students.
3. Create a web or plan sheet about their own hero
4. Formal/ Informal Language 329A transparency.
 

C. Practice-

1. Revise their webs (proofread/edit their writing)
2. Draft a sloppy copy using their web and the "Writer in Control" format on prompt "Explain why XXX is your hero".

D. Independent Practice-

1. Prompt should have a focus statement, two transitional devices, and a take away ending.
2. Each of the two transitional sentences should contain a main idea statement.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. small group instruction, repetitive instruction
2. no penalizing for spelling errors
3. extra time, graphic organizer
 

F. Checking for understanding-

Students will receive oral and written feedback about their assignments.
 

G. Closure-

Students will share their hero essay with class orally.
 
7. Evaluation-
Prompt will be scored by teacher using a 1-6 rubric.
 
8. Teacher Reflection-
If time permits, students should draft a friendly letter to their hero explaining why that person is their hero.
