5. Materials and Aids-
18 Student Writing Notebooks
Student Writing Utensils
Teacher Computer
Projector for PowerPoint presentation

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.The teacher will begin by checking for any background knowledge-will ask if any children have ever seen a letter, written a letter, mailed a letter.
2. The teacher will project the PowerPoint presentation that is titled "Writing Friendly Letters" from Pete's PowerPoint Presentations. The presentation will introduce the five parts of a friendly letter, while giving an example of each.

B. Development-

1.The teacher will hand out a "Writing Notebook" to each student.
2.The teacher will re-start the PowerPoint presentation. The students will then be given time to write the information on the five parts of a friendly letter into their notebook, including examples of each. Each part of the letter will be written on a separate page.

C. Practice-

1.TLW turn to a blank page in their "Writing Notebook" and will begin a "practice" letter.
2.TLW write the correct date, correct heading, and correct salutation.
3.Due to time TLW only practice the first two parts of a friendly letter. Each day another part will be added to their practice page.

D. Independent Practice-

1.After students have completed their practice page, the teacher will instruct a lesson over addressing envelopes.
3.Once students have been instructed on the entire letter writing process, as well as addressing mailing envelopes, students will be paired into partner groups. There will be nine groups of two.
4. The students will take turns writing to each other and "mailing" the letters to their partners' "paper file" in the classroom.
5. Once students have reached a deep understanding, TLW have the opportunity to write a letter to another student/teacher in the school. The letters will be enclosed in a correctly addressed envelope with a "sticker" stamp.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.The students will have access to their "Writing Notebook" at all times so that they have a visual reminder.
2.The students will be given extra time in order to complete the assignment if so needed.

F. Checking for understanding-

1.The teacher will ask questions throughout the learning process, so that highest level of understanding is met.
2.The teacher will watch student interaction/participation.
3.The teacher will monitor/walk around room during the process.

G. Closure-

Once the students have successfully completed their own friendly letter, they will be given the opportunity to write to another student in school. They may also write to another teacher if desired. Letters will be enclosed in envelope.

7. Evaluation-
