1. Topic-
Adding 2-digit numbers with and without regrouping |
2. Content-
AZ Math Standards
Strand 1: Concept 1: PO 8
Construct models to represent place value concepts for the one's,
ten's, and hundred's places
Strand 1: Concept 2: PO 1
Demonstrate the process of addition using manipulatives
Strand 1: Concept 2: PO 4
Add one- and two-digit whole numbers with regrouping
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
Students will model and understand addition of two-digit numbers
using base-ten blocks
4. Objectives-
1. Students will model two-digit numbers with base-ten blocks
2. Students will use base-ten blocks to model two-digit addition problems
3. Students will record two-digit addition problems in vertical addition
format |
5. Materials and Aids-
- Base-ten blocks for each student
- Place value templates
- Dice (2 per group)
- Overhead projector and overhead manipulatives |
6. Procedures/Methods-
A. Introduction-
1. Ask students to model a two-digit number using their blocks.
2. Call on a student to share the number they modeled.
3. Model it on the overhead.
B. Development-
1. Review two-digit numbers (tens & ones place)
2. Have students model 63 on their templates.
3. Ask students to add 24 to their templates.
4. Model and write the number sentence on the overhead (63 + 24).
5. Repeat with 54 + 37.
6. Discuss and explain regrouping (making a new ten.)
C. Practice-
1. Divide students into pairs, pass out dice.
2. Have students take turns rolling their dice to determine how many
tens and then how many ones to model.
3. Partners will then add their blocks together and record it on their
recording sheet.
4. Circulate and assist as necessary. |
D. Independent Practice-
Students will complete page 139,140 in their math books.
E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
1. Pair higher-level students with lower-level students.
2. Provide struggling students with only non-regrouping problems.
3. Allow extra time for struggling students.
4. Challenge higher level students with problems requiring regrouping
of both tens and ones. |
F. Checking for understanding-
1. Assess page 139 (front side) as students complete it to make
sure they understand before moving on to page 140.
2. Collect and assess page 140(back side) as a class the next day
for comprehension.
G. Closure-
1. Ask students how using the base-ten blocks helps them add and
subtract two-digit numbers.
2. Ask when they need to regroup (make a new ten family.) |
1. Student participation in discussion and activity
2. Student performance on independent practice and mid-chapter review
& end-of-chapter assessment |
