3. National Council of Teachers of Math- Understand meanings of operations and how they relate to one another

Expectations: Understand various meanings of addition and subtraction of whole numbers and the relationship between the two operations.
 
4. Objectives-
1. Student will relate objects to adding and subtraction numbers.
2. Student will show that a number and object can represent each other in math.
3. Student will summarize their answers to the given problems.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
pencil, worksheets, scissors, crayons, plastic baggy, timer
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Launch (5 minutes) Whole class stands and push chairs in. Teacher leads the class in singing "6 Little Monkeys Jumping on The Bed". Tell students to jump when the song says jumping and to hold up their hands to signal the number of monkeys we are counting.

B. Development-

1. Prior Knowledge- Students should be able to count to 20. Students should recognize the written numbers 1-20.
2.Students recognize the + and - sign.

C. Practice-

Teacher will model one adding and one subtraction problem on the smart board.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Teacher will pass out page 39 and have students color the monkeys. (10 minutes) Let students know that the timer will be set for 10 minutes and they have to be done at that time. Give a 2 minute warning to let students know that time is about up. Students need to put crayons away. Cut out the monkeys and set aside to begin lesson.
2. Teacher will pass out page 43.
3. Assignment (20 minutes) Teacher will go over instructions on page 39 and page 40, students have 20 minutes to complete lesson. When student is done have them turn in both pages and give them a baggy to put their monkeys in for later use.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Gearing Up: If students complete assignment early, teacher will let students do online math games at the following web site

2. Gearing down: Students will only work A_D on page 39 and 40.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Teacher will grade worksheets for correct answers to determine if student has accomplished the goal of adding and subtracting using objects.
2. Student assessment will be to have students come to smart board and do given problems.
 

G. Closure-

1. Teacher will reteach the lesson to the whole class using some examples from the worksheet.
 
1. Teacher will fill out the teacher rubric for this lesson to see if further instruction needs to be taught. If not will move on with 2 digit numbers.
2. If lesson needs to be taught again will pursue for tomorrow.

MoStep- Goal 1
I understand the concept of teaching addition and subtraction at the first grade level. Teaching math concepts using objects, pictures, or symbols is a beginning math concept students need to learn to further their learning in math. The teaching tools used is a fun way of learning and bringing fun into the classroom is a way to get students to want to learn. If students think learning can be fun they are more apt to want to learn.
