2. Content-
Sums

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-

5. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Who wants to be better faster at math?
2. Who wants to be more "accurate" at math?
3. In order to be faster and more accurate you have to be able to memorize math problems in your head and find ways to figure out math problems.
4. Show Brain Pop "Making Ten" Video

B. Development-

1. Give each pair of students 10 counters and a ten frame. Ask each pair to show me using the ten frame how to show 7+3.
2. Ask students to show what other combination of yellow and red counters could make 10.
3. Write out on the board, with the students, the multiple ways to make 10. Use both numbers and colors to demonstrate.
3. Try the Listen and draw activity on page 129.
4. Next Explain the Model and Draw activity on page 130. When adding numbers you can break apart a number to add ten. Then add the remaining part to the ten.

C. Practice-

1. The students will practice make ten with their ten frames and counters. Pg. 129
2. I will demonstrate how to use the ten frames with addition facts to ten. Showing the students on the smart board.
3. Then I will ask the students to demonstrate their knowledge on the smart board with problems that I ask them.

D. Independent Practice-

1. Pg. 130 - 132 problems 1-22.
2. Standards practice 3.3 P57-P58

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

3.Below level group "orange group" will work with another teacher in small group. We will work on their two activities using the ten frames and counter. Students will complete pg. 130-132. 1-14; 19, 20 and 22.

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Students will work on problems on pg 130 1 - 6.
2.Once finished the students will show me their work before moving on to the next part.
3.If the students show understanding they are able to work independently to the end if they show difficulty I will work with them in small group.

G. Closure-

1. Ask students "How can using the make a ten strategy by used to help you become better at math?"
2. Have students explain how to find the sum of 7+9.

1. Standards practice book 3.3 page
