1. Topic-
Regrouping

2. Content-
3 digit numbers regrouping in the ones column and tens column

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
The students will be able to regroup in the ones and tens column by the end of the class period. Students will be on task and working the entire time.

4. Objectives-
1. The students will understand what regrouping is.
2. The students will understand that the bottom number is larger than the top number and thus they need to regroup.
3. The students will borrow ten from the tens column to put in the ones column or borrow hundred from the hundreds column to give to the tens.

5. Materials and Aids-
Smartboard, base ten blocks board, eraser, base ten blocks, erasable marker, and worksheet

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

The students will sit on the carpet while the teacher shows them regrouping.

B. Development-

The students will work with a partner using the board, base ten blocks, marker and eraser. They will be given 3 digit numbers and practice regrouping with the base ten blocks.

C. Practice-

The students will be guided through 6 practice problems with the teacher.

D. Independent Practice-

The students will be given a worksheet to work on independently.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

The ADHD student and student who likes to move will hand out the worksheets and be allowed to stand while doing the worksheet independently. The severely disabled student will go to the math interventionist for one-on-one help. The aide will help the student that struggles learning math problems. If the gifted students finish the worksheet early, there will be a fun math worksheet for them to work on. The students who need more time will be given extra time while the students who finish will work on the 2nd (fun) worksheet.

F. Checking for understanding-

The worksheet will be handed in and checked how well the students are grasping the concept of regrouping. The students will be given a worksheet for homework that will be checked the next day for comprehension as well.

G. Closure-

The teacher will go over the first 3 problems on the worksheet and ask the students if they got it correct and understand.

After approximately 2 weeks of regrouping, the student will take a test. The second part of the lesson after several days to a week will be regrouping when the number is a zero. Worksheets, class time, and homework will be evaluated to see how the students are doing.

8. Teacher Reflection-
The teacher will evaluate what part of the lesson worked and which part did not. The teacher will consider editing the lesson if the students are struggling with regrouping concept. This type of lesson is probably best done several days in a row so the students grasp the concept of regrouping.
