1. Topic-
Algebraic Expressions

2. Content-
evaluate substitute
simplify
algebraic expression
input/output
variables

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
To be able to substitute a number for a variable in an algebraic expression.
To be able to complete the input/output graphic organizer that leads to understanding the nth term

4. Objectives-
1.To evaluate algebraic expressions
2.To replace a variable with a number, then simplify
3.Subsitute consecutive numbers in an algebraic expression to get a pattern

5. Materials and Aids-
Input/Output Graphic Organizer
Notebook
Extra Practice Sheet

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

Remind students how we investigate patterns and the nth term.

B. Development-

1.Show the formula $8.00 + $1.00e
2.Discuss what each part represents. (Pizza with extra toppings)
3.How much would a 5 topping pizza be?

C. Practice-

1.Have the students work with a partner.
2.Look at the question on the chart paper.
3.Come up with an equation.
4.How much does it cost to rent the room for 5 people?($25) For 10 people?($25) For 100 people?($25)
5.What is the cost of the food for 5 people? ($15)
How do you know
($3.00 per person)
6.What is the cost of food for 10 people? ($30)
For 100 people? ($100)
7.What is the total cost of the party for 5 people?
($25 + $15 = $40)
8.What is the cost of food for n people? ($3n)
9.What is the total cost for n people? (($25 + $3n)

D. Independent Practice-

Do questions 1 - 5 in the textbook, Page 385.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Extra practice sheet for students who find this easy.
2.Encourage students to think of patterning strategies.

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Ongoing Observations
2.Completing 5 questions.
3.Assessment Focus Questions (some students can use graphic organizer)

G. Closure-

1.Taking it further.
2.Questions 8 and 9 on page 386.
