Subject: Algebra 1
1. Topic-
Factoring Polynomials

2. Content-
SOL A.2c) factoring completely first- and second-degree binomials and trinomials in one or two variables. Graphing calculators will be
used as a tool for factoring and for confirming algebraic factorizations.

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Students will be able to factor binomials and trinomials of no more than 5 total terms by recognizing patterns in initial polynomials.
2.Students will be able to recognize prime polynomials, which cannot be factored.
3.Students will be able to confirm factors from a graphical representation, by recognizing x-intercepts.

4. Materials and Aids-
Factor Tables, Prentice Hall Algebra 1 Chapters 9-5 through 9-7.

5. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Students will recognize through teacher led discussion, that the last two terms of a trinomial are created by adding, and then multiplying the last term of each binomial factor. Students will use this knowledge to create factor tables, finding two numbers that add up to a certain sum, while also multiplying a certain product. This will help students factor trinomials in the form x^2+by=c, and recognize patterns when b or c is positive negative or zero. This will also help students recognize situations where trinomials cannot be factored.
2. Once students can factor trinomials with a leading coefficient of 1, students will use similar patterns to help factor trinomials with other leading coefficients, by listing all possible factors, and matching up coefficients that would produce the correct, a, b, and c coefficients.
3. Bell Ringers will be used to reinforce previous knowledge applicable to this unit.

B. Practice-

Students will practice in groups and with monitoring from teacher once introduced each concept. Kuta Software practices will be utilized.

C. Independent Practice-

Students will be given homework in chapters 9-5 through 9-7, which will be reviewed in class as a formative evaluation.

D. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Algeblocks may be used as teacher checks for understanding, either during class or Tribe Time depending on the results of the formative evaluation.

E. Checking for understanding-

Assessment will be made during class time (group work) and homework.

F. Closure-

Summative Evaluation.

7. Evaluation-
Summative Evaluation through Interactive Achievement.
