1. Topic-
Hands on Equations--Lesson
Algebra

2. Content-
Algebra, Variable, Balanced, Equation, Expression, unknown, Constant

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Be able to use the properties of addition, multiplication, and/or division in written and mental computations.
2.Be able to find the missing term(s) in a pattern using pictures and numbers.
3. Represent mathematical situations and structures using algebraic representations

4. Objectives-
1.Create a model of an equation using manipulatives
2.Translate a pictorial representation into an equation.
3.Evaluate equation involving basic operations by substitution (Guess and Check)

5. Materials and Aids-
balance scale mat, cubes, pawns, teacher model set, digital projector, individual whiteboards (marker & eraser), student note sheet, worksheet

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Review the purpose of the scale mat and pieces by name, pawn = x (unknown quantity), cube = constant (number that stays the same)
2.At the end of this lesson-should be able to use the manipulative to create an equation, draw a picture of the mat to represent the equation and use Guess & Check to solve for x.

B. Development-

1. Write 2x on whiteboard.
2. Show students what that looks like with teacher materials. Discuss the 2 in front of the x. Compare that to the cube 2. Make sure students know the difference by adding a +2 on the whiteboard. Then adding a cube 2 on teacher model. Ask if it is an equation or an expression. (Think Pair/Share w/ reasoning of difference)
3. Create an equation with class using their suggestions and teacher set.
4.(After step 1 in practice), Show students how to draw picture of the balance mat. ( = pawn, =cube)

C. Practice-

1.Write "2x + x = x + 8" on whiteboard. Have students create on their mats. Check for understanding by circulating.
2. Have students draw the picture of their mats on the whiteboards. Check for understanding.
3. Students copy the equation on whiteboard and use Guess & Check to solve for x on whiteboard. Check for understanding.
4. Try another equation. 3x + 1 = x + 7.

D. Independent Practice-

1. Distribute worksheet. Have students fold into 4ths.
2. On back, have students draw the equations. On front, use Guess & Check to solve for x. Show work. Discuss #5-10. This is review from Lesson 1.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Call small group of students that had/may have problems with lesson. (Teacher observation during check for understanding & knowledge of individuals)
2.Bring mat, bag of materials, whiteboard, and worksheet with pencil.
3. Go over #1 & #2 together using whiteboards then pencil on worksheet.

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Discuss what was learned this lesson.
2. What was difficult and how they figured out what to do. What was easy.

G. Closure-

1.Record new learning on notes page.
2. Quick thumbs up/down for "Got It"
