1. Topic-
Simplify Algebraic Expressions
Review Commutative and Associative Properties using Addition

2. Content-
Commutative Property- addends are the same but the order is different without changing the sum

Associative Property- grouping of addends is different without changing the sum

Variable-an alphabetic character that represents a number, a value

Simplify Expressions-by using like terms using the Commutative and Associative Properties of Addition to allow you to organized and rewrite the expression

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Demonstrate and check for understanding of the Commutative and Associative Properties
2. Understand how to simplify algebraic equations
3. Students will use manipulative's to demonstrate and practice

4. Objectives-
1. Have students define difference between Commutative and Associative Properties at board
2. Have students make up their own equation to demonstrate for each
3. Students will use manipulatives to show understanding of how to simplify by using both the Commutative and Associative properties to simplify expressions

5. Materials and Aids-
Manipulative cards
paper and pencil

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Review the Commutative and Associative Property for addition using addends and variables
2. Have 4 students go to board to write the missing number or variable
3. Have 4 other students name the property used

B. Development-

1. Pass out paper with equations and manipulative's
2. Demonstrate how to use the blocks to represent the expression
3. Walk around the room to check for understanding and execution

C. Practice-

1. Have students do the next equation on their own
2. Have a student explain how they used the Associative and Commutative properties to simplify the equation
3. Use the blocks to complete problems provided in book

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students will work problems provided on the board for more practice
2. Students will draw squares using colored pencils to show how they simplified
3. Have students work problems on board using colored markers

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Have students work with partners for the ones that are still struggling
2. Teacher will walk by each student to check for understanding and answer questions
3. Students will hear, see and use manipulative's to help understand

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Review the Commutative and Associative Properties
2. Review that a variable stands for an unknown value
3. Answer questions from students

G. Closure-

1. A fun way to understand how the Commutative and Associative Properties work to simplify an equation
2. Congratulations! You have just learned a fundamental skill for algebra!

7. Evaluation-
1. Did students gain understanding for the use of Commutative and Associative Properties for simplifying expressions?

2. Where the students actively engaged in learning by seeing, hearing and doing?

3. Grade papers completed from independent practice.
