Subject: Algebra I
1. Topic-
Solving Linear Equations

2. Content-
Solve Multi-Step Equations

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
To solve multi-step equations

4. Objectives-
1. Solve an equation by combining like terms
2. Solve an equation using the distributive property
3. Solve an equation by multiply both sides by the reciprocal

5. Materials and Aids-
1. Pencil
2. Notebook
3. Calculator

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Real-World Application - A person many want to know how long it takes to ride one section of a bike trail if you ride the whole trail in 55 minutes, pedaling at 14 miles per hour for part of the trail and 8 miles an hour for the rest. This lesson will involve several methods that can answer problems such as these.

(5 minutes)

B. Development-

1. Solve an equation by combining like terms
Review the definition of "like terms"
Model a problem that involves the following process:
Write original equation
Combine like terms
Simplify to isolate x.

2. Solve an equation using the distributive property
Review the definition of distributive property
Model a problem that involves the following process:
Write original equation
Distribute to parentheses
Simplify to isolate x.

3. Solve an equation by multiplying both sides by a reciprocal
Review the definition of a reciprocal
Model a problem that involves the following process:
Write original equation
Multiply both sides of the equation by the reciprocal
Simplify to isolate x.

(20 minutes)

C. Practice-

1.All students should obtain a whiteboard.
2.I will provide students with 6-8 questions that will be displayed on the board.
3.Students will show their whiteboard to me upon completion of the problem.
4. I will give immediate feedback.

(15 minutes)

D. Independent Practice-

1. I will not have enough time for this in class, as we have completed the whiteboard activity above.
2. Students should complete page 424 # 2-22 even for homework.
3. Homework will be submitted tomorrow for review.

(2 minutes)

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Students will receive copies of the notes if needed
2.Students may do ever other problem during the whiteboard activity

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Students must complete their ticket to leave:
identify the three methods we used to solve multi-step equations

(5 minutes)

G. Closure-

1. Summarize the material covered and how it relates to the objectives (listed above).

(2 minutes)

7. Evaluation-
Notes trends or issues that were observed during the whiteboard practice
