1. Topic-
Story problems involving equations/inequalities. |
2. Content-
Standard A1.2.6 Solve word problems that involve linear equations,
formulas and inequalities. |
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Students will be able to set up equations or inequalities using
information given in the word problem.
2. Students will utilize prior knowledge, in solving these equations
and/or inequalities.
3. Students will be able to create their own story problem that utilizes
variables. |
4. Objectives-
1. Understand what the problem is asking us to find.
2. Set up equations/inequalities correctly.
3. Solve for the variable.
5. Materials and Aids-
PowerPoint slides, exit slip and worksheet. |
6. Procedures/Methods-
A. Introduction-
1. Quick review of our understanding of solving linear equations
and inequalities.
2. Very brief review of geometric formulas for area of rectangle and
triangle.
3. Discussion: How often does someone hand you a linear equation to
solve? Are there ways in real-life you can use what we've been learning?
B. Development-
1. Using 1st prepared example, model to students my thought process
when trying to determine what information we need from a story problem
in order to write an equation/inequality.
2. Using more prepared examples, as a group we will write the equations/inequalities
needed in order to solve the problems.
3.Include examples using area. |
C. Practice-
1. Students will work in small groups (2-3 students)coming up with
their own story problem. (3-4 minutes)
2. Groups will then 'exchange' problems and solve a problem from another
group.
3. Volunteers will then be able to explain how they solved their problem
and show their work on the board. |
D. Independent Practice-
E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
1. Lecture/Whole Group discussion
2. Small Group work
3. Individual work |
F. Checking for understanding-
1. Checking that all groups were able to successfully solve the
problem they were given.
2. Exit slip.
3. Worksheet |
