2. Students will make a plan for solving problems involving purchases
items from a store and finding the total cost.

5. Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
(5 min)
1. Relate the upcoming activity to purchases multiples of the same
item from a store, such as Mac's Market.
2. Show students the red kangaroo example problem on page 164.

|
B. Development-
(10 min)
1. Model multiplying decimals as repeated addition of decimals using
the red kangaroo problem (Activity 1)
2. Repeat the demonstration for Activity 2 on page 165.

|
C. Practice-
(10 - 15 min)
1. Have students make models to match problems 1 - 4 on page 165.
2. Monitor students as they color, ask questions about what they are
doing. Have students say decimal numbers aloud.
*Early finishers may try numbers 9 - 12, finding the total cost of
each purchase with or without using models.
3. Students will compare models with a neighbor. |

D. Independent Practice-
(15 minutes)
1. Have students make models of problems 5 - 8.

each purchase with or without using models.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
1. Multiplication charts for students with accommodation.
2. One-on-one help with special education teacher fro students with
accommodation.
3. Review of concepts of "tenths" and "hundredths" using the model.

F. Checking for understanding-
(15 minutes)
Assessment: Lesson quiz on page 165. Have students glue create models
for these four problems. |

G. Closure-
Explain to students that the next activity will involve making purchases
of multiple items, and we will learn to multiply without using models.
|

|
1. Groupings for the next day's follow-up activity will be based
on the assessment.
