1. Topic-
Understanding Decimal Place Values

2. Content-
decimal, decimal point, tenths place, hundredths place

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
The lesson will help students understand the role of the decimal point and the relationship between tenths, hundredths, and thousandths.

4. Objectives-
1.Students will explore decimal values.
2.Students will read and write decimals using tenths, hundredths, and thousandths.
3.Compare decimals using greater than and less than notations.

5. Materials and Aids-
practice questions, pencil, paper.

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.introduce key vocabulary words
2.students will fold a paper and write the definitions of the words as a dictionary.
*decimal-often refers to a base-10 positional notation
*tenths place value-when the decimal point is followed by a single number
*hundredths place value-when the decimal point is followed by two numbers
*thousandths place-when the decimal number is followed by three numbers

B. Development-

Using the board, illustrate the difference between tenth, hundredths and thousandths place values. Show how numbers may have the same value. (0.1, 0.10, 0.100). Allow students to read the place and values and write them, in decimal form and as a fraction.

Ask students to name instances when it is important to calculate and record numbers less than 1 (Possible answers: time, money, scientific measurements). Use instances from life to show the class how each of the following decimals is written and read.

* Marcel's slice of pizza cost $1.35.
* In the 1988 Summer Olympics, Carl Lewis won the gold medal for running the 100-Meter Dash in 9.92 seconds.
* An inch is equal to 2.54 centimeters.
* The average body temperature is 98.6° Fahrenheit.
* When comparing decimals, begin on the left and compare the digits in each place. Example:
* Compare 0.11 and 0.12.

C. Practice-

As a class, students will write 25. Next, students will write 2.5 (two and five tenths). Next, students will write 0.25 (25 hundredths).
Complete worksheet with a partner.

D. Independent Practice-

Check another group's worksheet.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Additional questions may be asked during the guided practice until students understand.

F. Checking for understanding-

Students will answer which numbers is greater, less or equal:
0.1 < 0.2
0.31 > 0.3
1.46000 = 1.46

G. Closure-

Students will review the assessment as a class.

7. Evaluation-
Students will have a pop quiz on place values.
