1. Topic-
2. Content-
We will be covering fractions. Students will learn where they are
used in the real world. Students will become familiar with terms associated
with fractions such as numerator and denominator. |
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Students will be able to write a fraction that describes what
part is shaded.
2.Students will be able to identify and describe numerators and denominators.
3.Students will be able to identify equal fractions. |
4. Objectives-
1.Student will demonstrate a strong grasp of fractions.
2.Students will be able to make a connection with fractions to real
world situations.
3.Students will be able to use fraction terminology appropriately. |
5. Materials and Aids-
Colored Construction paper cut in to eight slices for each group.
Round laminated pie crust for each group. Blank paper to write fractions. |
6. Procedures/Methods-
A. Introduction-
Imagine you had a pie that you wanted to share with seven of your
friends. How would you cut it so that each person received equal parts?
Tell students that through this activity they will learn how to divide
something into equal parts. |
B. Development-
1.Introduce the pie and the pieces.
2.Show students how to place the pieces on the pie to represent the
shaded area.
3.Demonstrate on board how to write the fraction.
4.Introduce numerator and denominator. Tell students denominator and
down both start with d so they can make an association. |
C. Practice-
1.Break into groups of eight.
2.Ask the students to shade different portions of the pie and write
the fraction on their paper.
3.Ask students to identify the numerator and denominator as they write
them down.
4.Ask students to try and identify as many fractions as they can using
the pie and cutouts. |
D. Independent Practice-
1.Fraction worksheets.
2.Entry into math journal.
F. Checking for understanding-
1.Small group review.
2.Teacher observation.
G. Closure-
1.Return the pie and cutouts to bags.
2.Ask students the original question of how they would divide the
pie in order to give equal parts to each person. |
