1. Topic-
"Does Practice Really Make Perfect?"

2. Content-
Addition of fractions

Common Denominator

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
I hope for students to gain the understanding that there is value in practice, but the choice is always up to them. This ties in with my current curriculum in that this lesson is a skill that students should have mastered before 7th grade but many have not. Lacking essential skills means continual struggle for students who cannot grasp new material because of gaps in their previous learning

4. Objectives-
1. S.W.B.A.T. add fractions using common denominators
2. Explain why common denominators are necessary
3. Add fractions accurately

5. Materials and Aids-
White board, notebooks and pencils, Tic-tac-toe worksheets

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

Students will first complete a review Tic-tac-toe sheet using simple 4-operation problems (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), possibly some geometry, or greatest common factor problems, by choosing 3 problems diagonally, horizontally, or vertically from the worksheet

B. Development-

All students should be able to answer every problem chosen correctly and tell me why they understood how to do it. What made the problems easy?

C. Practice-

1. After reviewing their work, we will identify Common denominators: what are they, and why are they needed?
2. With partners, students will give examples of mismatches from real life, for example, a pony and horse pulling a cart together
3. I will show a Math Playground Video " students should be able to state WHY common denominators are necessary from information stated in the video

D. Independent Practice-

1. With partners, students will try 2 problems from the board
2. Students will work independently on a worksheet

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Students may use a multiplication chart to find common multiples for denominators

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Students should be able to explain WHY common denominators are necessary in order to add fractions
2. Students should be able to explain why they chose the denominator for a particular problem
3. Is this difficult or easy? Why?

G. Closure-

Choose any 6 problems on the Homework sheet. Why should you do them?
