1. Topic-
Multiplication of Fractions

2. Content-
Multiplication of Fractions

California Content Standard-
Grade 5: NS 2.4 Understand the concept of multiplication and division of fractions.

Key vocabulary: numerator, denominator, multiply, reduce, divide

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Students will demonstrate mastery of multiplying fractions.
2. Students will know when to simplify answers and will simplify correctly when required.
3. Students will work as a team, interact with each other to solve math problems, and increase social skills by working towards a common goal.
4. Students will work towards mastery of multiplication facts.

4. Objectives-
1. Students will compute multiplication problems involving fractions.
2. Students will simplify fractions when the answer can be simplified.
3. Students will engage in positive peer interactions by working together as a team to complete multiplication problems and play the game.

5. Materials and Aids-
overhead projector, dice, overhead markers, copies of game for students, markers, pencils, multiplication charts, calculators

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Introduce the concept of multiplying fractions (done before the day of the game).
2. Tell students today they will be playing a game. The students are competing against the teacher to get 4 squares in a row on the board.

B. Development-

1. Show students how to play the game.
2. Roll the dice and show how to determine which multiplication problem should be done based on the numbers rolled.
3. Students choose color of marker and teacher chooses a different marker color.

C. Practice-

1. One student rolls the dice. Teacher shows student which problem to do and writes it on the board.
2. Entire class writes down the problem in their math notebooks.
3. Students are guided by teacher in completing the first couple of problems. Each step is written out on board with help from students. (Students are called on or use fingers to show numbers for numerators and denominators of the product.)
4. As students find product, they come up to the overhead and color in the corresponding square.

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students complete problems on their own without teacher assistance.
2. Teacher reviews as needed.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Instructional aides circulate and check for student understanding. Help individual students as needed.
2. Use of calculators and multiplication charts.

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Teacher circulates and checks for understanding.
2. Teacher asks for answers by method of holding up fingers to indicate answers or thumbs up/thumbs down for agree/ disagree.

G. Closure-

1. Students complete the game and turn in math notebooks to be graded.
2. A homework assignment of multiplication of fractions is given.
