1. Topic-
What are fractions?
Digital Storytelling through Paperslide videos

2. Content-
What makes up a fraction?
Key vocabulary: Numerator, Denominator, Fraction Bar, Part to Whole

Fractions of a Set/Whole and Length:
Key vocabulary/ideas: Whole, length, number line showing fractions in a set through different shapes

Comparing Fractions:
Less than, greater than, equal too, showing representation/visual model to compare fractions

Equivalent Fractions
Key vocabulary: equal, same, unequal

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of the components that make up Fractions including key vocabulary and elements.
2. Students will demonstrate their understanding of comparing fractions using visual representation accompanied by verbal presentation.
3. Students will show the difference between fractions of a set and whole using pictures, numbers, and words.
4. Students will show the relationship between equivalent fractions through drawings.

4. Objectives-
1. Students will practice teamwork skills by taking on a specific role in the group, participating appropriately, and demonstrating on task behavior through this cooperative learning exercise.
2. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of fractions by creating a story digitally via paperslides.
3. Students will practice their presentation skills along with their verbal skills and exhibit their knowledge on the topic of fractions.

5. Materials and Aids-
Storyboard Template for Planning
Flipcamera
Art Supplies
Math Today Vocabulary Reference Book
Activboard to display students final paperslide videos with the class

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Introduce that the students will be working on a Digital Storytelling project where they will work in teams to create paperslides. Get the students excited by reflecting on past use of paperslide videos- successes and struggles?
2. Review key components of fractions that we have learned thus far in the unit. Provide examples on the activboard. Have students work on identifying parts of a fraction, comparing fractions, and identifying equivalent fractions.

B. Development-

1. On the activboard show students the video clip, "How to Make a Common Craft Style Video"
2. Provide students with a list of optional topics.
3. Break students into teams.

C. Practice-

1. Provide samples of students fraction paperslides.
2. Teacher uses Self talk to demonstrate how students will each agree to a role in their group and stick with it throughout the duration of the project
3. Students break out into their teams as teachers monitor and guide teams, especially students with special needs, to deciding on role taking and planning their storyboards.

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students work in teams and complete their part of the project. (ex. Scribing the storyboard for the group, creating paper cut outs, Writing the script, drawing the paperslides, Writing the vocabulary terms on the paperslides...etc.)
2. Students organize their paperslides in order of their retelling
3.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Provide storyboards and additional graphic organizers as needed for students with organizational weaknesses.
2. Scribe storyboard for group members with fine motor difficulties.
3. Provide further examples and investigation of fractional terms as needed.
4. Support teams with overall organization and flow of storytelling.
5. Minimize the amount of slides depending on working speed and learning needs.

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Teacher checks in with each group as they practice for final filming of their paperslide.
2. Students practice independently 3x with script and "pretend" filming.
3. Completion of paperslide video as a team.

G. Closure-

1. Display and share each groups paperslide with the class.
2. Discuss and reflect on struggles and successes of the project both individually and as a team. Have students enter thoughts via active expressions anonymously and discuss as a whole group.

7. Evaluation-
1. Observation of teamwork and partnership during group work
2. Final group presentation- Paperslide video
3. Rubric attached

8. Teacher Reflection-
We are still in the midst of completing this lesson. I have done a lesson with paperslides in the past in a reading workshop, however this time around, I feel I provided the students with more structure and guidance, yet them be creative and independent at the same time. The biggest difference is having each team member choose a specific role in the planning process and final project presentation. The students are taking more responsibility for their role in the group and the teamwork and on task behavior has shown improvement since the last time we did paperslides. The video Donna supplied on "How to Make a Common Craft Style Video" truly provided a clear outline for the kids to follow, which I didn't have the first time around.
I will post some as the students finish this week.
